Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) is one of the most important, influential, and often-cited philosophers of the twentieth century, yet he remains one of its most elusive and least accessible. The essays in this volume address central themes in Wittgenstein’s writings on the philosophy of mind, language, logic, and mathematics. They chart the development of his work and clarify the connections between its different stages. The contributors illuminate the character of the whole body of work by keeping a tight focus on some key topics: the style of the philosophy, the conception of grammar contained in it, rule-following, convention, logical necessity, the self, and what Wittgenstein called, in a famous phrase, ‘forms of life’.

Martin Heidegger is now widely recognized as one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. He transformed mainstream philosophy by defining its central task as asking the ‘question of being’. His thought has contributed to the turn to hermeneutics and to postmodernism and poststructuralism. Moreover, the disclosure of his deep involvement in Nazism has provoked much debate about the relation of philosophy to politics. This edition brings to the fore other works, as well as alternative approaches to scholarship. The essays cover topics such as Heidegger’s conception of phenomenology, his relation to Kant and Husserl, his account of truth, and his stand on the realism/anti-realism debate. This edition includes a new preface by the editor, revised versions of several essays from the first edition, and an exhaustive bibliography, providing guidance for both newcomers to Heidegger’s work and established scholars.

Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd

Format: Paperback 280 pages
ISBN 13: 9780141015002

“The Architecture of Happiness” is Alain de Botton’s exploration of the hidden links between buildings and our well being. Bestselling author Alain de Botton has written about love, travel, status and how philosophy can console us. Now he turns his attention to one of our most intense but often hidden love affairs: with our houses and their furnishings. He asks: What makes a house truly beautiful? Why are many new houses so ugly? Why do we argue so bitterly about sofas and pictures – and can differences of taste ever be satisfactorily resolved? Will minimalism make us happier than ornaments? To answer these questions and many more, de Botton looks at buildings across the world, from medieval wooden huts to modern skyscrapers; he examines sofas and cathedrals, tea sets and office complexes, and teases out a host of often surprising philosophical insights. “The Architecture of Happiness” will take you on a beguiling tour through the history and psychology of architecture and interior design, and will forever alter your relationship with buildings. It will change the way you look at your current home – and help you make the right decisions about your next one. “Engaging and intelligent …full of splendid ideas, happily and beautifully expressed”. (“Independent”). Alain de Botton is the author of non-fiction essays on themes ranging from love and travel to architecture and philosophy.

The “Art of Travel” is Alain de Botton’s travel guide with a difference: an exploration of why we travel and what we learn when we do. As seen on Channel 4 Few activities seem to promise is as much happiness as going travelling: taking off for somewhere else, somewhere far from home, a place with more interesting weather, customs and landscapes. But although we are inundated with advice on where to travel to, we seldom ask why we go and how we might become more fulfilled by doing so. With the help of a selection of writers, artists and thinkers – including Flaubert, Edward Hopper, Wordsworth and Van Gogh – Alain de Botton’s bestselling “The Art of Travel” provides invaluable insights into everything from holiday romance to hotel minibars, airports to sightseeing. The perfect antidote to those guides that tell us what to do when we get there, “The Art of Travel” tries to explain why we really went in the first place – and helpfully suggest how we might be happier on our journeys. “Richly evocative, sharp and funny. De Botton proves himself to be a very fine travel writer indeed”. (Sunday Telegraph”). “Delightful, profound, entertaining, I doubt if de Botton has written a dull sentence in his life”. (Jan Morris). “An elegant and subtle work, unlike any other. Beguiling”. (Colin Thubron, “The Times”). Alain de Botton was born in 1969 and is the author of non-fiction essays on themes ranging from love and travel to architecture and philosophy.

The Anatomy School Bernard MacLaverty - SGD12

Publisher: VINTAGE
Published: 03 October 2002
Format: Paperback 368 pages
ISBN 13: 9780099428466

This is the story of the growing up of Martin Brennan, a troubled boy in troubled times, a boy who knows all the questions but none of the answers. This is Belfast in the late sixties. Before he can become an adult, Martin must unravel the sacred and contradictory mysteries of religion, science and sex; he must learn the value of friendship; but most of all he must pass his exams – at any cost. A book that celebrates the desire to speak and the need to say nothing, The Anatomy School moves from the enforced silence of Martin’s Catholic school retreat, through the hilarious tea-and-biscuits repartee of his eccentric elders to the awkward wit and loose profanity of his two friends – the charismatic Kavanagh and the subversive Blaise Foley. An absorbing, tense and often very funny novel which takes Martin from the initiations of youth to the devoutly-wished-for consummation of the flesh, Bernard MacLaverty’s book is a remarkable re-creation of the high anxieties and deep joys of learning to find a place in the world.

Publisher: VINTAGE
Published: 04 November 1999
Format: Paperback 208 pages
ISBN 13: 9780099284888

The long-awaited new collection from Bernard MacLaverty examines worlds in collision, relationships fragmenting, innocence face to face with real life, real death. A Catholic schoolboy minding goal has a theological debate with a B-Special; a chess game in Spain is a catalyst for grief and redemption; a Belfast man out walking his dog is kidnapped at gunpoint and told to say his ABC…Interwoven through the book are wry, elliptical ‘stories within stories’ about fiction and the writing of it, featuring ‘your man’ -a comically beleaguered alter ego. Acting as foils to the brilliance of the real thing, these very short pieces point up the tough lyricism of MacLaverty’s work. As always, his writing is vivid, exact and pellucid, his characters perfectly observed, the surface of the prose deceptively still. It is only once we enter the world of the stories that we begin to make out the huge shapes that move there: loss, love, disappointment, fierce joy. WALKING THE DOG has been worth waiting for: it is a powerful, honest and moving book by one of the great storytellers of our age.

Lucky Jim - Kingsley Amis, Introduction by David Lodge - SGD10

Publisher: PENGUIN CLASSICS
Published: 25 May 2000
Format: Paperback 272 pages
ISBN 13: 9780141182599

Kingsley Amis’ witty campus novel, “Lucky Jim” is a comedy that skewers the hypocrisies and vanities of 1950s academic life. This “Penguin Modern Classics” edition contains an introduction by David Lodge. Jim Dixon has accidentally fallen into a job at one of Britain’s new red brick universities. A moderately successful future in the History Department beckons – as long as Jim can stave off the unwelcome advances of fellow lecturer Margaret, survive a madrigal-singing weekend at Professor Welch’s, deliver a lecture on ‘Merrie England’ and resist Christine, the hopelessly desirable girlfriend of Welch’s awful son Bertrand. Inspired by Amis’s friend, the poet Philip Larkin, Jim Dixon is a timeless comic character, adrift in a hopelessly gauche and pretentious world. Kingsley Amis (1922-1995), born in London, wrote poetry, criticism, and short stories, but is best remembered as the novelist whose works offered a comic deconstruction of post-war Britain. Amis explored his disillusionment with British society in novels such as “Lucky Jim” (1954) and “That Uncertain Feeling” (1955); his other works include “The Green Man” (1970) “Stanley and the Women” (1984), and “The Old Devils” (1986) which won the Booker Prize. If you enjoyed “Lucky Jim”, you might like Amis’s “The King’s English”, also available in “Penguin Modern Classics”. “A flawless comic novel…I loved it then, as I do now. It has always made me laugh out loud.” (Helen Dunmore, “The Times”). “A brilliantly and preposterously funny book.” (“Guardian”).

Novels of E.M. Forster - James McConkey - SGD8

Publisher: Gazelle Book Services Ltd
Published: 01 December 1971
Format: Hardback 176 pages
ISBN 13: 9780208004642

Excerpt from the Introduction: Although he has published only five novels, E.M. Forster maintains a high rank among the writers of fiction in the twentieth century. Yet for a writer whose works have been consistently accepted as among the best the first half of the century has produced, it is remarkable how inadequate has been the criticism dealing with him.\ The portion of Forster’s novels which deals essential with the world of human relationships, the world of human reality, is not difficult to analyze; and it is indeed an important element in his fiction. That is is but a portion, however, and that the world of human reality is ever contrasted with another reality any reader of him is aware. Forster’s interest in both the human and transcendent realities accounts for what his friend G. Lowes Dickinson has termed his kind of “double vision,” a sense of “this world, and a world or worlds behind.” These “worlds behind” cannot be ignored or given a minor position by the critic, for in Forster the sense of the transcendent realm consistently affects and colors the physical realms.

Fountainhead of democracy, engine of the Industrial Revolution, epicentre of the globe’s greatest empire, and the first-ditch stand against an expansionist Germany in two world wars: England’s history is among the most fascinating and influential the world has ever known. This volume presents that history in unique form: first-hand, through the words of those who saw it and those who made it. All the great events of the last 2,000 years are here: the Norman Conquest, Magna Carta, the Peasants’ Revolt, Henry VIII’s break with Rome, the Great Fire of London, Nelson at Trafalgar, two world wars. Alongside these are the less obvious happenings which together capture the nation’s social history, such as the Black Death of 1349 or life as a chimney sweep in 1817. And of couse there are the things that have shaped the nature of ‘Englishness’, like theatregoing in Elizabethan London, fox hunting in 1898, Oates’s self-sacrifice at the South Pole, the Beatles and the 1966 World Cup. Presented chronologically and a joy to read whether cover-to-cover or dipped into as a treasury of sources, “England: The Autobiography” offers an intimate, vivid and revealing portrait of England and the English – and the unique place of both in world history.

Publisher: ROUTLEDGE
Published: 01 March 2004
Format: Paperback 288 pages
ISBN 13: 9780415287555

‘We may therefore conclude that imagination is not an empirical power added to consciousness, but it is the whole of consciousness as it realizes its freedom.’ – Jean-Paul Sartre . Sartre’s L’Imaginaire was first published in French in 1940 and in English in 1948. This new translation, the first for over fifty years, is of the recent French edition revised by Arlette Elkaim-Sartre. It corrects many important mistakes in the earlier English translation and includes a new introduction by Jonathan Webber, placing the book in a contemporary context. The Imaginary is one of Sartre’s most important works and an ideal introduction to his thought. It is a brilliant and lucid examination of one supposedly simple human act: the act of imagining something. Sartre’s genius is to show that between this act and the world that imagination creates, lies nothing less than a new theory of of human consciousness. The book contains Sartre’s devastating criticisms of scientific psychology and he presents, for the first time, the radical theories of consciousness and human freedom that were to appear a few years later in his magnum opus, Being and Nothingness. Considering the role of the imagination and the emotions, such as disgust, Sartre argues that it is because human beings can imagine or think of things as they are not , that they are ultimately free. The Imaginary is essential reading for anyone interested in Sartre, exitentialism, phenomenology, twentieth century philosophy and philosophy of mind.

‘These propositions may seem mild, yet, if accepted, they would absolutely revolutionize human life.’ With these words Bertrand Russell introduces what is indeed a revolutionary book. Taking as his starting-point the irrationality of the world, he offers by contrast something ‘wildly paradoxical and subversive’ – a belief that reason should determine human actions. Today, besieged as we are by the numbing onslaught of twenty-first-century capitalism, Russell’s defence of scepticism and independence of mind is as timely as ever. In clear, engaging prose, he guides us through the key philosophical issues that affect our daily lives – freedom, happiness, emotions, ethics and beliefs – and offers no-nonsense advice.

P.S. The Freud-Jung Letters: Correspondence Between Sigmund Freud and C.G. Jung was snatched up really quickly! After it was sold, more people expressed their interest to buy the text. I am incredibly moved by this. The state of the book was not quite perfect, in fact it was far from even good. I had to give it an “acceptable” grading. I am happy (and really shouldn’t be too surprised) that so many of my friends and friends of theirs easily look past the superficial (tattered) book cover to appreciate the book for its contents.

A Man of Parts - David Lodge - SGD20

Publisher: HARVILL SECKER

Format: Paperback 576 pages

‘The mind is a time machine that travels backwards in memory and forwards in prophecy, but he has done with prophecy now…’ Sequestered in his blitz-battered Regent’s Park house in 1944, the ailing Herbert George Wells, ‘H.G.’ to his family and friends, looks back on a life crowded with incident, books, and women. Has it been a success or a failure? Once he was the most famous writer in the world, ‘the man who invented tomorrow’; now he feels like yesterday’s man, deserted by readers and depressed by the collapse of his utopian dreams. He recalls his unpromising start, and early struggles to acquire an education and make a living as a teacher; his rapid rise to fame as a writer with a prophetic imagination and a comic common touch which brought him into contact with most of the important literary, intellectual, and political figures of his time; his plunge into socialist politics; his belief in free love, and energetic practice of it. Arguing with himself about his conduct, he relives his relationships with two wives and many mistresses, especially the brilliant student Amber Reeves and the gifted writer Rebecca West, both of whom bore him children, with dramatic and long-lasting consequences. Unfolding this astonishing story, David Lodge depicts a man as contradictory as he was talented: a socialist who enjoyed his affluence, an acclaimed novelist who turned against the literary novel; and, a feminist womaniser, sensual yet incurably romantic, irresistible and exasperating by turns, but always vitally human.

The restrictions of a wartime childhood in London and subsequent post-war shortages have done little to enrich Timothy’s early youth. But everything changes when Timothy’s glamorous older sister, Kath, invites him to spend the summer at Heidelberg. Kath, who left home long ago to work for the American army, introduces her sixteen year-old brother to a lifestyle that is deliriously fast, furious and extravagant. Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd

Format: Paperback 192 pages

“Penguin Decades” bring you the novels that helped shape modern Britain. When they were published, some were bestsellers, some were considered scandalous, and others were simply misunderstood. All represent their time and helped define their generation, while today each is considered a landmark work of storytelling. David Lodge’s “The British Museum is Falling Down” was published in 1965 and is a brilliant comic satire of academia, religion and human entanglements. It tells the story of hapless, scooter-riding young research student Adam Appleby, who is trying to write his thesis but is constantly distracted – not least by the fact that, as Catholics in the 1960s, he and his wife must rely on ‘Vatican roulette’ to avoid a fourth child.

Deaf Sentence - David Lodge - SGD14

Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd (UK)
Published: 01 June 2009
Format: Paperback 308 pages
ISBN 13: 9780141041049

In British writer Lodge’s (Author, Author) modest 13th fictional effort, an elderly man’s hearing loss embroils him in a sticky situation with a beautiful, manipulative young woman. Sexagenarian Desmond Bates wears a hearing aid after being diagnosed some 20 years earlier with acquired deafness and consistently misinterprets people’s words (which Lodge milks to maximum comic effect). Bates longs for activities after his retirement from teaching applied linguistics, other than contemplating e-mail spam about erectile dysfunction and watching his wife, Winifred, enjoy her success as an interior designer. The novel takes the form of his newly begun daily diary. At a gallery event, Bates mistakenly agrees to help shapely, enigmatic American student Alex Loom with her Ph.D. thesis on suicide notes. It quickly becomes clear that Loom’s intentions are anything but academic and her instability shakes not only the sound foundations of Bates’s family life but his long-since-stagnant fantasy life as well.

One of my favourites from Lodge.

A successful sitcom writer with plenty of money, a stable marraige, a platonic mistress and a flash car, Laurence ‘Tubby’ Passmore has more reason than most to be happy. Yet neither physiotherapy nor aromatherapy, cognitive-behaviour therapy or acupuncture can cure his puzzling knee pain or his equally inexplicable mid-life angst. As Tubby’s life fragments under the weight of his self-obsession, he embarks – via Kierkegaard, strange beds from Rummidge to Tenerife to Beverly Hills, a fit of literary integrity and memories of his 1950s South London boyhood – on a picaresque quest for his lost contentment.

Publisher: Penguin Books

ISBN 13: 9780140130188

The ups, downs, and exploits of a group of British Catholics–for whom the sexual revolution came a little later than it did for everybody else… In this bracing satire, a group of university students make their way through the fifties and into the turbulent sixties and seventies. We first meet Dennis, Michael, Ruth, Polly, and the others at the altar rail of Our Lady and St. Jude, but soon enough they get caught up in the alternately hilarious and poignant preoccupations of work, marriage, sex, and babies–not always in that order. A satirical comedy in the tradition of Evelyn Waugh, Souls and Bodies take an unblinking look at the sexual revolution and the contemporaneous upheavals in the Catholic Church. The result is as unsettlingly true as it is funny.

Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd
Published: 02 December 1993
Format: Paperback 912 pages
ISBN 13: 9780140172973

This omnibus lines up David Lodge’s trio of brilliantly comic novels that revolve around the University of Rummidge and the lives of its role-swapping academics. When Philip Swallow, lecturer in English at Rummidge, changes places with flamboyant Morris Zapp of Euphoric State University, USA, trouble ensues. Then, ten years on, older but not noticeably wiser, they are let loose on the international conference circuit – a veritable academic carnival. And finally, Dr Robyn Penrose becomes part of a scheme to learn about industry instead of reading about it, with hilarious results. David Lodge exposes the dizzy pursuit of knowledge – literary, commercial, romantic and erotic – with unparalleled wit and insight.

Essays in Love - Alain de Botton - SGD9

Publisher: PICADOR
Published: 01 May 2006
Format: Paperback 224 pages
ISBN 13: 9780330440783

Essays in Love will appeal to anyone who has ever been in a relationship or confused about love. The book charts the progress of a love affair from the first kiss to argument and reconciliation, from intimacy and tenderness to the onset of anxiety and heartbreak. The work’s genius lies in the way it minutely analyses emotions we’ve all felt before but have perhaps never understood so well: it includes a chapter on the anxieties of when and how to say ‘I love you’ and another on the challenges of disagreeing with someone else’s taste in shoes. While gripping the reader with the talent of a great novelist, de Botton brings a philosopher’s sensibility to his analyses of the emotions of love, resulting in a genre-breaking book that is at once touching and thought-provoking.

Hi All,

I will be uploading more of my beloved books in the days to come. It has been very hard to pick which ones to let go, but I would prefer for them to be read and loved by my fellow passionate readers to being left behind, untouched and uncared for, when I am away.

Hope that you’d continue to check out this page and let me know which books you’d like to get 🙂

Love,

Kai

Japanese for Busy People: Workbook Bk. 1 + CD - SGD15

Japanese for Busy People is the most popular and comprehensive Japanese language textbook series in the world. Now, the series is redesigned to meet the needs of 21st-century students and businesspeople who want to learn natural, spoken Japanese as effectively as possible in a limited amount of time.

The book features not only a sleek, new design but also a unit structure that groups thematically linked lessons together, making it easier than ever to learn Japanese.
Moreover, it now comes with a CD containing audio for the dialogues and listening exercises from the text. The exercises in the book have also been thoroughly revised to incorporate more comprehension and production tasks. Many of these exercises are illustrated, making for a stimulating learning experience, and the purpose of each one is clearly stated.

This first of three volumes introduces “survival Japanese”-the absolute minimum amount of Japanese needed to live in Japan. Thus, the vocabulary and grammatical items it introduces are limited to about a third of what is typically introduced in a first-year course. In addition, the book features notes on Japanese culture intended to expand the learner’s understanding of Japan, its customs and people.
